Umang Bhatt is a Postgraduate Research Fellow at the Partnership on AI, working within PAI Labs. He is focused on technical aspects of AI explainability, including quantitative evaluation criteria for feature-level explanations and understanding how information flows through deep neural networks.

Prior to joining PAI, Umang worked on conversational agents in Azure at Microsoft and dynamic pricing algorithms for personalization at Groupon. Umang also has a background in AI for infrastructure, working on a startup that used citizens’ smartphones to detect potholes and assess road conditions at scale on behalf of city governments.

Umang holds a Bachelors of Science and a Masters of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon. In Fall 2019, Umang will be joining the University of Cambridge to pursue a doctorate in Machine Learning supported by the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence’s Trust and Transparency Initiative.
